Democracy Around The Dinner Table: Shabbat with Melanie Levav

Jewish tradition teaches, “Be careful in your relations with the government; for they draw no one close to themselves except for their own interests. They appear as friends when it is to their advantage, but they do not stand by a person in their time of stress.” (Ethics of our Fathers 2:3) The same book of our tradition also teaches, “Pray for the welfare of the government, for without fear of governmental authorities, people would swallow each other alive” (Ethics of our Fathers 3:2). So which is it? Should we stay away from involvement with our government to whatever extent possible, or should we be praying for them to keep law and order. Maybe it’s both. No matter what your political persuasion, Kibbutznik is happy to welcome you to celebrate a special Shabbat in which we’ll have the opportunity to learn about and question the place of democracy from a Jewish perspective. Rabbinical student and longtime Marks JCH staffer Melanie Levav, LMSW will lead an engaging discussion for parents, as well as guide our Kibbutznik Madrichim in their concurrent experiential program with kids.
